Navigating Nepalese Visa Regulations: A Practical Guide
Entering Nepal is a straightforward and welcoming process for the vast majority of international travelers. The Department of Immigration offers an efficient "Visa on Arrival" system at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, as well as at several land border crossings with India. Proper preparation will ensure you breeze through the immigration hall and hit the streets of Kathmandu without unnecessary delays.
Ensure that your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry, and contains at least one completely blank page for the physical visa sticker.
1. Visa on Arrival (VOA) Process at TIA
Upon landing at Kathmandu airport, proceed to the immigration hall and follow these steps:
- Step 1: Electronic Kiosks: Locate the electronic visa kiosks in the hall. Scan your passport and input your flight details to generate a printed slip containing your application receipt. (To save time, you can fill this out online up to 15 days before arrival and print the confirmation page).
- Step 2: Pay the Fee: Take your slip to the bank counter. Pay the visa fee in cash (major currencies accepted: USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD). Carrying exact change in USD is highly recommended.
- Step 3: Passport Control: Present your passport, payment receipt, and printed slip to the immigration officer at the designated counter to receive your visa sticker.
2. Current Visa Fee Structure
Nepalese visas are issued with multiple-entry privileges. The fees are standardized as follows:
- 15-Day Visa: $30 USD (Perfect for short treks, Poon Hill, or cultural tours).
- 30-Day Visa: $50 USD (Ideal for classic high-altitude treks like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit).
- 90-Day Visa: $125 USD (Recommended for mountaineers, multi-region explorers, or long-term volunteers).
Note: Children under the age of 10 receive a gratis (free) visa, but still require a physical sticker. Citizens of SAARC nations receive a free visa for up to 30 days per calendar year.
3. Online Pre-Arrival Application
To avoid long queues at airport kiosks, we highly recommend completing the Online Tourist Visa form on the official portal of the Department of Immigration (nepalimmigration.gov.np) within 15 days of your flight. After submitting, print the barcode confirmation receipt and bring it along with your exact payment cash.
4. Extending Your Visa
If the mountains capture your heart and you decide to extend your adventure, the process is simple. You can apply for a visa extension at the Department of Immigration offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara. The minimum extension is 15 days (costing $45 USD), with a daily rate of $3 USD thereafter. Tourists are permitted to stay in Nepal for a maximum of 150 days per calendar year.
